The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it must comply with specific regulations. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be developed to be accessed without problems by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The requirements have raised some questions as the top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
